Dan Wheldon, a two-time Indianapolis 500 winner, died on October 16 in a 15-car pileup while racing at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, USA Today is reporting. He flew over another vehicle and hit the catch fence just outside turn two.
Wheldon was driving for the chance to win $5 million. He was in the middle of the car line-up when he drove into the other vehicles, which were careening off each other in every direction. He clipped another car and went hurling in the air, as he was unable to avoid the massive wreck before him. Wheldon’s car then burst into flames as it hit the fence.
