American Idol Top 36 Contestant Joanna Pacitti Ruled Uneligible to Continue in the Competition

While 35 American Idol are finally able to publicly celebrate their entry into this season's top 36, which was announced on the hit FOX show on Wednesday night, Joanna Pacitti, the last contestant, has since been disqualified.

Pacitti underwent attacks by fans and critics alike after it was discovered earlier in the season that she has an extensive music career background. In response, FOX releaed a press release after the show’s broadcast Wednesday night, announcing that she was ruled ineligible to continue.

“It has been determined that (Joanna) Pacitti is ineligible to continue in the competition,” the statement said. “...Felicia Barton has replaced Ms. Pacitti as part of the Top 36.”

The network made the decision to avoid any suggestion of unfairness. Pacitti once worked with a person who was subsequently hired by 19 Entertainment, one of the producers (along with FremantleMedia) of the show. Pacitti also once knew another employee of 19 Entertainment.
Pacitti was also disqualified because, as AccessHollywood.com previously reported, she had been cast in Annie on Broadway. She also recorded an album for Geffen records, named This Crazy Life, which was released in 2006.

Pacitti also record songs for movie soundtracks; they include Watch Me Shine for Legally Blonde, as well as Out From Under from the Bratz movie, which was later re-recorded by Britney Spears on her new CD, Circus.

Many fans agreed with FOX's desicion, as seen on American Idol’s official forum. The posts generally state that since she is a semi-professional, she already has a built-in fan base that will automatically send her through to the top 12.
