David Letterman Producer Starts Jail Sentence

Robert “Joe” Halderman, the former CBS television producer who tried to extort money from David Letterman over his affairs with staffers, began his six-month jail term on May 4, the Associated Press (AP) has reported.
Before being led from a New York City court room to start the sentence, Halderman had nothing to say. The 52-year-old producer ended up pleading guilty in March to attempted grand larceny, admitting he demanded $2 million to keep from revealing Letterman’s affairs. In addition to the jail sentence, he also received 1,000 hours of community service.

The Lazarus Effect HBO Documentary Review

The Lazarus Effect HBO Documentary Review
In a selfless effort to raise awareness worldwide about the impact that antiretroviral (ARV) drugs have in curing HIV and AIDS, HBO is set to air a new documentary, titled ‘The Lazarus Effect.’ The documentary, which was directed by Lance Bangs and executive produced by Spike Jones, subtly parallels the journey that the more than 29 million people living with HIV or AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa go through every day to the Biblical story of Lazarus.
The documentary also brilliantly shows the struggles and triumphs that Africans living with HIV or AIDS face and overcome. Bangs interviewed four people who live in Lusaka, Zambia, and have been diagnosed with the disease. Their journeys back to health show that their lives do, indeed, resemble the story of the Lazarus Effect.
The first powerful shot of ‘The Lazarus Effect’ is of an African woman, who is clearly sick, explaining the story of Lazarus. She detailed how Jesus walked into Lazarus’ grave after he died and pulled him out, saying he would live again. She then says it’s a story of hope, which Bangs showed was the case with the four people he documented.
These people include Bwalya, an 11-year-old orphan; Paul Nsangu, a young man who is married and has a daughter; Concillia Muhau, who has a daughter that is virus-free; and Constance (Connie) Mudenda, an HIV Peer Education Supervisor.
After her and her husband were both diagnosed with HIV, Connie was able to courageously move forward with her life, even though they had to decide to either pay for their ARVs or for food. After hearing about a clinic that offered free drugs, she was one of the first people to enroll.
Connie now works as a Peer Education Supervisor at the same clinic. She helps fund the 40 cents a day needed for the ARVs, which most patients can’t afford. She also selflessly educates people how to stay healthy with the disease and how they can prevent transmitting it to others.
Connie also rightfully encourages patients to attend support groups. While people in Lusaka were at first afraid to go to the group because they were fearful of the stigma that surrounds it, she resiliently expanded the group from five patients to most of the community.
‘The Lazarus Effect’ was produced by HBO Documentary Films, in conjunction with the private sector (RED) and Anonymous Content. It is set to premiere on Monday, May 24 at 9pm EST, as part of a large-scale campaign (RED) has launched to show the impact that AIDS programs have throughout Africa.
HBO should be praised for taking a step back on showing just purely entertainment movies and instead also focusing on life-threatening issues. The world can come to realize that through the help of (RED) and several health organizations, including The Global Fund and The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, Africans inflicted with HIV or AIDS can survive by taking ARVs. The drugs are paid for by the organizations, who also want to help educate people living with the disease on how to stay healthy.
With the help of ‘The Lazarus Effect,’ (RED) and its partners, including Apple, Gap and Hallmark, the impact and benefits ARVS have in treating AIDS in Africa really has a way to reach more people than ever before. Viewers will most likely not only empathize with those inflicted with HIV or AIDS, but they will also want to help fight the pandemic any way they can.

Randy and Evi Quaid Accept Plea, Avoid Jail Time

Randy and Evi Quaid Accept Plea, Avoid Jail Time
Randy Quaid and his wife Evi have avoided additional jail time in their hotel bill-skipping case, People.com reported on April 28. A judge in Santa Barbara Superior Court accepted a plea deal from the couple behind closed doors.
The judge dismissed all charges against the 59-year-old actor, while his 46-year-old wife pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor of defrauding an innkeeper. She will have a year to perform 240 hours of community service. Evi said she will work with the homeless in Los Angeles, and will develop a theater program for them.
Randy said that he and Evi were treated “a bit more harshly by authorities because of my celebrity status. Usually, with celebrities, they tend to try to make an example of you.” Outside of the courthouse, he also said that he learned that “you pay your bills when you leave, and I suppose that’s something we can work on in the future.”
The couple was arrested last September in Texas for failing to pay a more than $10,000 in hotel bill at a Santa Barbara resort. If convicted, they would have faced three felonies. Randy and Evi both spent time in jail for missing earlier court dates, and were recently declared fugitives. When they arrived to court on Monday, they were detained for three hours, but were released on $100,000 bail each.
In their defense, the Quaids said their arrest was a misunderstanding. They maintained that they thought they could pay their bill by mail, while prosecutors stated they gave the hotel invalid credit cards.

Sandra Bullock Adopts a Son, Files for Divorce

Sandra Bullock Adopts a Son, Files for Divorce
While Sandra Bullock’s personal life took a turn for the worst earlier this year after numerous women claimed to have had affairs with her husband Jesse James, the Oscar winner confirmed to PEOPLE that she has adopted a son. Bullock appears on the April 28 issue of the magazine with her 3-and-a-half month old son, Louis Bardo Bullock, who she adopted from New Orleans right after he was born in January.
‘The Blind Side’ actress decided to keep the adoption a secret from even her friends until after the Academy Awards. She said that “I did not want him brought into a world that would not have been too sincere to him as I wanted. I wanted to be alone with him as long as I could then we had to tell his story.”
Bullock also confirmed to the magazine that she has filed for divorce from her estranged husband, who she separated from days after her Oscar win. She added she is sad and scared about the process. In response to the divorce, James told PEOPLE that he has a huge hole in his heart. He added that Bullock’s decision to adopt Louis as a single mother has also been hard. “The love I have for Louis cannot be put to words. Not having him around to love and to hold has left a huge hole in my heart,” he added.
After James’ alleged affairs surfaced, Bullock quickly moved out of the home the two shared together, and has stayed out of the spotlight. This is only the second time she has made a public comment since the separation, the first being a statement denying they had made a sex tape.
